It’s undoubtedly been a huge year for Meghan Markle – it’s only her second as a formal royal, and she’s managed to squeeze in everything from launching her own clothing line to going on two official tours abroad. Oh, and she also gave birth to her first child.

We already knew Meghan to be a polished and fashion-forward dresser, and this year was no different. Whether she was giving us a masterclass on glamorous maternity-wear or showing her enduring love for colour blocking, the Duchess of Sussex pulled out all the fashion stops in 2019.

Here are some of her best looks from the year.

Meghan took a sartorial risk for one of her first appearances of the year by matching a purple dress with a bright red coat. This was a particularly surprising choice from the former actress, who tends to stick to neutral colours and matching shades. Meghan got a lot of love for her Sentaler coat and Aritzia dress, particularly as the unusual colour clash was reminiscent of some of Princess Diana’s outfits.

Maternity dressing has certain outdated stigmas attached to it, but throughout the year Meghan showed us just how glam a growing bump can be. Take this navy sequinned dress she wore to watch Cirque du Soleil at the Royal Albert Hall, which was designed by Roland Mouret.

If there are two things the fashionista knows how to do exceptionally well, it’s neutrals and colour-blocking. She pulled this off in January during a visit to the National Theatre, wearing a blush Brandon Maxwell dress with a matching jacket and Aquazzura heels. This was Meghan’s first visit to the National Theatre since becoming a patron, a role that fits perfectly with her background in acting.

In a bird print dress…

Meghan isn’t normally seen wearing prints, so this Oscar de la Renta dress made a pleasant change of pace. The activist leaned into the floaty romance of the chiffon dress which was emblazoned with bright birds and colourful flowers. She wore the outfit during a snowy day in Bristol, bringing a bit of brightness with her fashion.

In a crisp white shirt…

Markle is consistent in her love of crisp white shirts, showing just how versatile they can be. For this year’s Endeavour Fund Awards, which celebrates the achievements of wounded servicemen and women, she elevated a plain white shirt from workwear to formalwear with the addition of a long black skirt.

The outfit was bespoke Givenchy – the same fashion house responsible for her wedding dress – and was paired with a Meghan-favourite: a low bun.

For an event at the Natural History Museum, the mum-to-be wore another custom outfit, this time by Calvin Klein. The high necked dress with a matching coat was the perfect way to pull off winter whites.

In blue Carolina Herrera…

One of Meghan’s stand-out outfits during her trip to Morocco was a blue patterned Carolina Herrera dress. It was a rare example of the Duchess not wearing a form-fitting outfit during her pregnancy, and the chiffon gown was particularly romantic with waterfall sleeves and a billowing skirt. The dress was adjusted to fit Meghan’s bump, but you can still find the original runway version on Net-a-Porter.

In her own collection…

In September Meghan launched the Smart Set capsule collection for Smart Works, a charity that provides training and interview clothes for female job-seekers. The capsule wardrobe – sold through high street retailers like John Lewis and Jigsaw – features crisp white shirts and tailored trousers, which Meghan wore to launch the collection.

Meghan often uses the power of fashion to pay tribute to the places she visits and nod to her own values. On the first stop of the Duke and Duchess’s tour in Africa, Meghan did so by wearing a black and white wrap dress from brand Mayamiko.

The brand’s website says: "Our collections are cross-seasonal and are inspired by African artisanal traditions and prints, with ethical trading and sustainability at our core." All of its clothes are handmade in Malawi with a focus on ethical and sustainable production – issues that are also close to her heart.

In autumnal colours…

Choosing to wear different shades of the same colour is a tricky fashion statement to pull off, but Meghan did so in October when attending a discussion on gender equality. She wore a burgundy Hugo Boss pencil skirt paired with a V-neck sweater in a deeper wine colour, along with matching pumps. With the leaves starting to turn, Meghan was giving a true masterclass in how to do autumnal colours in a fresh way.
