Greta Gerwig's remake of literary classic Little Women promises to leave us all obsessed with lacy necklines, fuller skirts and Timothée Chalamet's curly locks (once again), but at the premiere for the hotly anticipated film, star Saoirse Ronan took modest dressing to a more extreme - but chic - level.

Held in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the star chose a suitably avant garde ensemble, dazzling in a Gucci gown that combined Hollywood glamour with arty kitsch.

The black column gown featured voluminous sheer sleeves, a high lace-trimmed neckline and an unusual cream bib over the bust, studded with turquoise and gold detailing.

Never one to shy away from something daring, however, Ronan made up for the conservative neckline with a thigh-high slit and matching knee-high black boots.

While the star never fails to wow us with her outfits, more and more we find ourselves looking forward to what makeup and hair she'll go for. Although she often goes for extremely minimal makeup, frequently looking like she's wearing no makeup at all, when she wants to impress, she really impresses.

Makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua accentuated her striking blue eyes like an Egyptian-inspired line of graphic blue liner, using Chanel's Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Intense Teal, keeping mascara minimal. A swipe of highlighter, arched out brows and a peachy pink lip finished the look.

Meanwhile, her hair was kept sleek and modern, falling just below her ears and with an asymmetrical parting.

Her Little Women co-stars also turned it out on the red carpet, with Emma Watson dazzling in a black Balenciaga gown with tulle detailing at the bust, thigh-high velvet pointed boots, and Fred Leighton jewelry. Her tousled hair was worn up in a modern take on the prairie style, while her deep crimson lipstick was bang on trend for winter.

Florence Pugh showed more leg than Saoirse and Emma, choosing a turquoise Valentino gown, but brought the drama with its sweeping off-the-shoulder bow detail, while Eliza Scanlen brought medieval silhouettes into the present day with her all-white Khaite dress.

Laura Dern wowed in a midnight blue Ralph Lauren Collection crystal-embroidered gown, featuring a high neckline, long sleeves and daring open back, while Timothée Chalamet made the case for bringing full pinstripe back in his Alexander McQueen pinstripe suit and matching shirt. We love you and your hair Timmy, but we're less sure about this look!

Overseeing the festivities was director Gerwig, stunning in a crystal-embroidered Oscar de la Renta Spring 2020 gown, that apparently took 400 hours to make, according to the brand's Instagram account.
