Life is full for Kathryn Thomas right now and she's loving it. Just three weeks after her festival-style wedding, where she danced for three whole days and then ate her own body weight in pizza on her Italian honeymoon, the busy presenter, fitness coach and mum to 18-month old Ellie has just been nominated Carlow Person of the Year.
Kathryn’s home county is host to the 2019 National Ploughing Championships and the RTÉ tent was the venue for a chat with Ray D’Arcy. She loves being back in Carlow where her mum still lives. Kathryn’s recent three-day wedding extravaganza took place at Kilkea Castle, just across the border in Kildare:
"My thing was, I wanted a kind of a festival."
She certainly got what she wanted, with 11 acts booked to play over three days. The Operation Transformation presenter says that apart from a family barbeque before the wedding, she spent hardly any time talking to her guests. She had another agenda.
"The music started just before the desserts came out and I hit the dance floor and I didn’t stop 'til Monday."
A musical high point of the wedding was a performance by Brian Kennedy. Working with Brian on The Voice some years back, Kathryn was so captivated by his unique sound that she made a mental note to ask him to sing at her wedding long before she met her now husband Pádraig:
"If I ever found the fella, I knew who I wanted to sing at the wedding."
Ray turned the conversation to Kathryn’s choice of wedding gown. The custom made dress turned heads with its deep V at the back, created by folds of ivory silk meeting just below the small of her back in an oversized bow. Kathryn told Ray she’d known for years what she wanted the stand-out feature of her wedding dress to be.
"Anytime I’m at a wedding, I love looking at the back of a bride’s dress. I’d seen this photograph, maybe four or five years ago, of a couture Chanel dress and it had that big sort of oversized bow."
Kathryn’s vision wasn’t easy to realise though. Luckily for her she was working with Dublin based award-winning designer Umit Kutluk who took on the challenge and nailed it.
"I brought him the photograph and he said, you know I don’t think we can make that. It took a long time to get it right, but we got it. I loved it. I felt really comfortable and I felt really confident on the day."
