Hosted by Girls Trip actress Regina Hall, the 2019 BET Awards took place at the Microsoft Theater in California on Sunday night with performances from Meek Mill, John Legend, Cardi B, Migos, Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Lizzo.

The late Nipsey Hussle, who died following a shooting in March, was honoured with a posthumous Humanitarian award while Tyler Perry received the Ultimate Icon Award and the legendary Mary J Blige was awarded a Lifetime Achievement award.

Taking to the stage to celebrate Blige, Rihanna praised the Grammy-winner for paving the way for women in the music industry.

"Mary J. Blige, you have set the bar for relatable, timeless, classic music. You opened multiple doors for female artists in this industry, and on behalf of all the women who came after you, like myself, thank you for being you so we can be comfortable being ourselves."

Other winners on the night included Childish Gambino's This is America for Video of the Year, Beyoncé took home Best female R&B/pop artist while Bruno Mars walked away with Best male R&B/pop artist, the late Nipsey Hussle was honoured with the Best Male Hip-Hop artist award while Cardi B received the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist award and Album of the Year for Invasion of Privacy.

Later in the night, Regina King won Best Actress, Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor, Marsai Martin was awarded the Young Stars Award, BlacKkKlansman was named Best Movie, Serena Williams went home with the award for Sportswoman of the Year and Stephen Curry was given Sportsman of the Year.
