Even with a posse that included two drag queens and surrounded by a bevy of glamorous stars, Lady Gaga's star shone in her dramatic white and gold ensemble.

She may not have won the gong for her show-stopping role in A Star Is Born, but Lady Gaga once again asserted herself as an award show expert, with her angelic and daring white and gold look an event in and of itself.

Sashaying down the red carpet in a raw edge pure white gown with plunging neckline and a thigh-high slit, Gaga proved her star power by wearing the Dior couture gown mere days after it debuted on the French fashion house's runway, paired with matching white Jimmy Choo shoes.

The figure-hugging layering of delicate fabric brought to mind Marilyn Monroe's infamous white dress from The Seven Year Itch, though Gaga's accessories and makeup rooted it firmly in the 21st century, with makeup by Sarah Nicole Tanno and styling by Sandra Amador and Tom Eerebout.

Pairing the elegant gown with deep burgundy lipstick and nail polish and dark and sultry lashes, the star avoided looking too ethereal or demure - she was, after all, being celebrated for playing a down-on-her-luck songstress. Eyebrows dark and slightly unruly, Gaga's hazel eyes sparkled through the vampy look.

It was what we've come to expect from Gaga: classic, refined, a touch of subversion and always something unexpected, modern and incredibly chic.

Enter Frederic Aspiras, the star's long-time hairstylist and the creator of many of her most iconic looks. His vision for last night's awards was what he called "Chic Biba", pulling the star's platinum blonde tresses into a slick low chignon, with a slight 1930's-style wave curling back over one ear.

Never one to skimp on glamour, Gaga finished her look with dazzling jewellery from Tiffany & Co, mixing an intricate gold and diamond choker inlaid with a star motif (always on message) with unusual butterfly-inspired earrings and two shimmering gold bracelets on each wrist.

It's a testament to Gaga's style that she could hold her own in such a comparatively restrained look alongside not one, but two drag superstars, Willam Belli and Shangela of Rupaul's Drag Race fame, and Luenell, acclaimed comedian and actress, who appeared in A Star Is Born.

If the SAG Awards are traditionally a warm up for the Oscars, we can't wait to see what the icon pulls out of the wardrobe next.
