Irish designers reveal top tips for investment pieces

The best and brightest of emerging Irish designers took centre stage at the launch of CREATE 2017 in Brown Thomas on July 3rd.

Focusing on both new and returning talent, the showcase now in its seventh year, hosts twenty-two Irish designers and their lavish creations ranging from jewellery to homeware.

Director of fashion at the store and showcase curator, Shelly Corkery, described the talent on show as "exceptional". "It’s very exciting to deliver new and diverse collections to our customers" she said.

We caught up with some of the designers to get their advice on what we should be shopping for this coming season.

Goldsmith Helena Malone is showcasing her new range inspired by the sea, 'Celestial Mechanics'. She says we should focus on the personal and unique when splashing out this season.

"A nice dress ring, something that speaks to you, something that means something to you with an interesting stone" she says.

When it comes to home furnishings, textile designer, Aoife Mullane whose work is rooted in the natural world recommends focusing on fabrics over fads.

"I work with all natural fabrics - wools, silks, linens – I really think that the longevity is much better with these type of natural fibres" she explains.

"Invest in a piece that will last and that has longevity" she says.

Luxury scarf designer Sarah Swan, exhibiting her collection 'Cuba Havana', argues that it’s not so much what you wear but how you wear it.

 "They [scarves] can be worn in so many different ways" she says. "They can be the elegant piece over the shoulder, draped down so you can see the whole image because they are like art pieces".

CREATE 2017 takes place on level one in Brown Thomas Dublin from July 3rd to August 13th.
