Designer Paul Smith is set to receive the highest accolade in British fashion from the British Fashion Council, later this month at the British Fashion Awards.

The Outstanding Achievement prize will be given to the iconic designer, 65, whose label is 35 years old.

Smith is known for his attention to detail, quirky embellishment and sharp tailoring. His label began with menswear but quickly embraced all facets of design. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.

"I have known Paul for many years, he has built an incredible business, has bags of integrity and, a great sense of humour," said British Fashion Council chairman Harold Tillman.

"Paul Smith, the brand and the man, contributes a great deal to our industry commercially and creatively: his signature style is recognised throughout the world."

Previous recipients of the honour include John Galliano, Dame Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, who was given the award posthumously last year.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Smith said that the thing he is most proud of is "continuity - the fact that I've always done OK. I've never been number one or today's flavour".

"But I'm reliable, polite, and I deliver clothes on time that are well made at the right price", he added.
