Looking chic in the rain

Q. The weather is so unpredictable lately that I’m totally fed up of getting drenched on my way home from work. Have you any suggestions as to how I can look stylish during the wet spell?

A. If the phrase "stylish rainwear" sounds like a fashion oxymoron and the idea of dressing up for the drizzle seems absurd, then this might come as a bit of a shock.

Raincoats, classic macs and other bad-weather paraphernalia all got the catwalk treatment this winter, ensuring that we can look stylish during these wet autumn days. No more dowdy water-proof jackets, ditch those ugly old jumpers and jeans - 2011 is the year of chic outfits, whatever the season, whatever the weather.

Of course, there's no need to be silly about the situation. While a nice pair of Christian Louboutin stilettoes are undoubtedly stylish, you won't get very far in them during a hail storm. Instead opt for trendy but-sensible pieces that will keep you warm and dry without making you look like a bag lady.

For the ultimate bad-weather accessory, look for a well-fitted rain coat that will complement the rest of your wardrobe. Solid colours are always best, but there's nothing wrong with an elegant check, as British label Aquascutum proved this autumn. Find a jacket with a belt round the waist and you'll also give yourself a more defined silhouette, even if you're wearing thick, padded layers.
