This autumn the trend in men's fashion is very similar to last year, however, a few new looks are really grabbing our attention.
Updated military style, chic suiting and the return of velvet are just some of the style statements that will dominate the winter months. Military is back, and this time it's inspired by the 1940s and 50s - think greatcoats, aviator jackets and army boots with a shearling lining.
Suits have moved away from the 'skinny boy' look, with a new cut that will appeal to a military officer - broad shoulders, slender waists and slim trousers. The retro look is also set to be huge and Red Herring (at Debenhams) is aiming to help ensure guys can stay ahead of the trend with a new range of suits inspired by the sixties.
Lush and plush fabrics for evening jackets have brought the velvet tuxedo back into menswear. It has been the fabric of choice for the most fashion-forward gentlemen for decades. But don't get carried away. Wear velvet jackets with trousers in a different fabric, or vice versa.
On the high street, Next's latest menswear collection has a heritage feel, evidenced in checked and herringbone tailoring fabrics, chunky-soled brogue shoes and quirky detailing such as elbow patches. But it was the trouser-kilt hybrids at Kenzo that raised the most eyebrows this year, with one fashion observer describing it as "surprisingly fetching, requiring only a bold, fearless personality to pull them off". The bowler hat has also made a return, having languished in the fashion wilderness for well over a decade, but now it’s back in bold shades such as orange or black.
So whether you want to dress up like a proper English gent or a lounge lizard, to good news is that you’ll be spoilt for choice this season.
