Q. I’ve noticed that metallics are one of the key looks this autumn and even though I’m in my late thirties, I’d still love to wear a bit of sparkle. How can I wear the trend without looking a fashion victim?
A. Like it or not, metallics are big news this season. Shimmering fabrics used to come out only after dark, but in recent years they've become a pretty and practical part of the daywear palette and the trend looks set to stay as shades of silver and gold continue to glint on catwalks everywhere. From Halston, Victoria Beckham and Marchesa to Cavalli, Balmain and Burberry, almost every collection has a metallic sparkle somewhere.
Take a look at some high street metallics picks here.
Metallics are a perennial hit on the catwalk. And no wonder: lit from above, they glimmer and shine and look amazing in every photograph. But what dazzles on the runway doesn't always look so well when you are wandering down Grafton Street on a wet Tuesday afternoon - as anyone who has ever tried to wear hot pants will attest.
Arguably, the main problem with metallics is their brashness: it’s not a subtle look. It almost goes without saying, there will be pitfalls a plenty. Crucially, the fact that head-to-toe metallic can make you look like an Oscar statuette at best, and a foil-wrapped turkey at worst. Aim to subtly sparkle rather than dazzle onlookers with an outfit that screams ‘Look at me!’
While metallics are a wonderful wardrobe staple - they go with everything - take care with tone. Brunettes with olive skin can get away with pretty much anything, but blondes may find themselves washed out by some shades of silver. If you are particularly pale of face, then silver is about the only metallic to be avoided.
Bronze and gold, on the other hand, add warmth to any complexion, and look particularly stunning against black skin.
Obviously, tanned legs will transport you effortlessly into the sexy stratosphere - the ideal place to be when metallically adorned. If you're interested in the trend but wary of wearing it from top to toe, try teaming a sleeveless vest top with favourite black basics. If you'd rather highlight your pins, go for a loose shimmery skirt, once more paired with the black.
Just follow these simple rules and I’m sure that you will find something to put a sparkle in your eye.
HOW YOU CAN WEAR THE TREND:
They may seem intimidating but metallics are easy to wear. Try teaming a shiny top with jeans or a sequined mini-dress with leggings to make the trend more wearable. If it's still too "bling" try accessorising an everyday ensemble with gold or silver jewellery.
Team your sequins with a tuxedo jacket to keep the look edgy. Wear it with spike heels or opaque tights and ankle boots, teamed with a simple clutch, to let this statement piece shine.
