How to wear the pussybow blouse

Q. I’m looking for something chic to wear to the office and I was thinking of buying a pussy bow blouse. Have you any advice on how I can wear one without looking like my gran?

A. Back in the 1980’s - everyone from Thatcher to Diana, from Joan Collins to Princess Anne wore those prim little blouses.

Joyfully, we don't have to stomach Maggie's early years again, but the pussy-bow has crept back into fashion as quietly as a Siamese approaching its Whiskas. It is one of the signature elements of the Yves Saint Laurent look, which is hot as hell's core in fashion right now.

Should you wish to purchase a designer creation, you could pop into Brown Thomas and pick up Gucci's silk-chiffon pussy-bow, which is modern update of classic '70s style. But those without €890 to spare (hello everyone!) can pick up one on the highstreet for significantly less - Pennys are doing them for a mere €13.

To work the look, team them with pencil skirts, wide leg pants and smart high heels. Smart is the word, and blouses this season should be dressed up, not down. Think silk or satin, and with a pussy bow, sweeping sashes or frilly panels. The tight, curve-enhancing pencil skirt is another key ingredient to the seductive look. Pearls, brooches and heels complete the look.

For the office, wear it with a haughty expression and a pair of high-waisted trousers (one of winter's key trends, as seen at Louis Vuitton), and you might get away with looking more like a late Seventies uber-model than an early Eighties prime minister. Fingers crossed.
