How to wear a poncho

Ponchos are big news this autumn!
Ponchos are big news this autumn!

Q. I’ve been looking through all of the glossy magazines and they’re all predicting that the poncho is making a comeback this autumn. Although I’ve seen a few styles that I like, I’m not really sure what style to pick or what to wear them with. Have you any advice?

A. Once upon a time the poncho conjured up images of dirty cowboys in the Wild West - think Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. But, thanks to a style overhaul and newfound fans such as Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss and Elle Macpherson, fashionistas now have a penchant for the poncho - and it’s predicted to become one of autumn’s hottest looks.

Layering is big for this season, so a poncho is perfect for our erratic weather. When it's scorching one minute and like an October's day the next, the poncho is an essential cover up over a dress or vest and jeans. If you want an authentic vintage piece, trawl through second hand shops for the real deal, but there are some brilliant ponchos on the high street, everything from huge capes to chic capulets.

When it comes to colour, play it safe with versatile shades that work well with your wardrobe. Avoid multi-colours or patterns to refrain from the little old lady look, and pick a length and shape that works. With ponchos set to be big, inject some individuality into the look by accessorising with chunky jewellery or a belt. However, if you are in any doubt about wearing something that is likely to make you look shorter and plumper, leave the ponchos to Clint Eastwood.

HOW TO WEAR

Keep it simple: Like Kate Moss, team with slim fitting trousers for a flattering silhouette.

Avoid across-the-body bags or your poncho will get squashed up.

Make sure your hair is glossy and groomed -- you don't want to be mistaken for a hippy.

If you are worried that a poncho will make you look as if you are wearing a tent, choose a more flattering style with a belt.
