Members of the fashion world have paid tribute to Amy Winehouse following the news of her death at the weekend.

The 27-year-old singer, who publicly battled drugs and alcohol during her career, was found dead at her North London home on Saturday.

A spokesperson for Italian fashion house told WWD of the sad news: "We met Amy in Paris, fresh from having won five Grammys. That night, everyone discovered that in addition to a genius voice Amy also had an exceptional and very British sense of humour.

"Having restyled the Fendi dress she was wearing that night, she said with a wink: 'Forgive my ignorance; I don't know anything about fashion…' We are very sad for the loss of such a unique talent that in many ways transcended music, fashion, and culture."

Popstar Lady Gaga paid tribute to the late star on Twitter, writing: "Amy changed pop music forever. I remember knowing there was hope, and feeling not alone because of her. She lived jazz, she lived the blues."

Former popstar and fashion designer Lily Allen wrote about her sadness on hearing the news, tweeting: "Its just beyond sad, there's nothing else to say. She was such a lost soul, may she rest in peace."

Winehouse was once described by Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld as a "style icon", who spoke about the singer when she unveiled Chanel's Winehouse-inspired Paris-Londres Maison d'Art show in London in 2007. He said at the time: "She's a style icon. She's not only a muse; she's a genius. She's one of the greatest voices today."
