Q. Next weekend, I have particular reason to hope the sun shines: I have a date with a gorgeous man in Stephens Green, where, weather permitting, we will have a lovely picnic. What on earth should I wear?
A. The easiest solution to your problem is to wear a dress. The great advantage of a dress is that it's a one-stop solution to the daily question 'What will I wear today?'
A few dresses in your wardrobe will see you through almost any event life throws at you - well, at least you'll get the clothes right. A strapless maxi is an excellent picnic frock (no strap marks at the end of a sunny afternoon), and a midi or ankle length will save more blushes than a short skirt.
Shorts are an even better answer: life's too short to worry about exposing your knickers to the world. And while a short-sleeved or strappy smock top is a good way to cover up your ever expanding picnic bulge, don't forget some sort of cover-up.
A pashmina or cute cardigan is essential, especially in our unpredictable Irish climate and it will come in handy if the temperature drops. Shoe-wise, steer clear of towering heels unless you want to look like an overdressed eejit.
Also avoid footwear that takes ages to put on and remove, such as overly complicated gladiator sandals. Wedge heels and espadrilles are comfortable and add just the right amount of casual chic polish to the look. Now finishing touches - a hamper, a tablecloth, flowers, chocolates and a nice sweet wine.
