The Olsen twins are known for their pared-down, layered aesthetic, but they insist their look was born from practicality.
Speaking to Style.com Ashley said: "That moment for us was us waking up, going to school, and not wanting anyone to take our picture. It was kind of a piece of protection."
With favourite designers including Yohji Yamamoto, Christian Lacroix and Calvin Klein, Mary-Kate Olsen says it was also their move from California to New York that changed their way of dressing.
She further stated: "For me, New York was so cold, like the wind chill. How could you not put on 20 things when you're going from Los Angeles to walking through the snow? think it was probably that. And laziness."
