Pack the perfect wardrobe for a weekend away

Q. My boyfriend has just surprised me with a romantic weekend away at a five star hotel. I’m so excited I can hardly contain myself but, on the downside, I haven’t an idea what to bring? What on earth should I pack?
A.
Packing for a weekend away is a nightmare, as every girl knows. What will the weather be like? Will I need a brolly, a hat, a bikini, a cardigan? Is it formal wear or jeans, will I need a dress or shorts?

You may not have the time for two weeks on the beach but picking out which clothes to take on a special weekend away can be just as difficult. And when you are only heading off somewhere for a couple of days - be it Paris, Rome or even just Galway - you have to pack carefully.

The questions and possibilities are endless, but only one thing's for sure. You need to look stylish and be comfortable enough to forget what you're wearing and enjoy yourself on your weekend of fun.

You should have something for every occasion, but with careful planning, your can have that by mixing and matching just a few pieces. There will always be room in the bag to take your favourite new top and a slinky dress but make sure that the shoes you choose are practical for day and evening wear to let you squeeze that bit more in.

And more often than not, a floaty casual daywear top can be turned into something special with the help of a smart pair of trousers and accessories. Plain pieces are easier to match with that one-off piece so don't take a bag full of clashing prints.
Finally, don't forget those other weekend essentials: sunglasses and a hat, a book for your journey, a couple of your fave CDs and a disposable camera to catch all the action...

So what are the golden rules for packing your bags for a short break?

1) You're going away for only a couple of days so take a bag that reflects that length of time - a large case will be difficult to carry.
2) Make sure that the clothes you take are versatile. A pretty blouse can double up as a sophisticated evening wear with the right accessories.
3) You need no more than two pairs of shoes - and even that is pushing it. Take one pair of flats for daytime and one pair of evening shoes at most and, with sparkly sandals, you could get away with just one pair for weekend.
4) Make sure you clothes are versatile - a sarong, can double up as a scarf or belt.
5) Remember to enjoy yourself - otherwise what is the point of the weekend away.
