Time for a new spring coat

Step into spring with a new, lighter coat
Step into spring with a new, lighter coat

The cooler temperatures hanging doggedly around lately are making a lot of women glad they have spring coats, those between-seasons cover-ups that make hailing a cab or catching up on your shopping on a chilly day so much easier to bear.

Trench coats are no longer merely cover-ups for those unexpected spring showers, but can complement a variety of outfits, even when it isn't raining outside. They offer credibility to professionals and lend a degree of intrigue to characters on the big screen. Plus, where would we be without this cover-up that moves us between breezy, winter nights and spring's shower-filled days?

This versatile coat can be long or short and worn with or without a belt. Try different styles of trench coats to achieve different looks. This season, the trench has been given a colourful make-over and is now available in tomato red (New Look, €44.99) and floral prints (Monsoon, €95), as well as classic neutral (Littlewoods, €119). Layer up with more colour - a bright pair of heels or some navy capri pants to really put the spring in your step.

If you want to look chic, the simplest trenches, which are beige and belted, are, arguably, the most flattering. The perfect blend of masculine and feminine, they provide an aura of mystery - as though you might be wired up for a meeting with a mobster. We love the Holly Willoughby Belted Trench coat from Littlewoods, but remember; how you wear a trench is crucial. Although they look better on the long and the lean, when they are neatly belted, well-cut trenches can hide a multitude of sins.

Our favourite coat of the season, however, has to be Isme’s purple and black floral Mac. Wear it with killer heels and a smile; even if it’s raining coats and dogs you can't fail to look and feel bright and breezy in this spring gem.
