Five of the Best: Wedges

Get set to walk tall this season in towering wedges. For height without the hassle, the wedge shoe is the answer to heel phobic's prayers.

Wedges are here to stay this season and the catwalks went to extreme lengths with vertigo-inducing versions. Ignore those silly six-inch-plus numbers and wedges can be both comfortable and leg-lengthening!

Wear them with cropped pants. Wear them with flowery dresses. And, by all means, wear them with the season's popular maxi skirt. Wedge heels, which were stylish in the late '30s and '40s and made a big comeback in the '70s, are often dressed up with beading, ankle ties, rope trims and other embellishments.

One version I spied even had a butterfly carved out of the heel. But today's wedges still have that retro feel - a little disco, a little kitsch - which makes them especially attractive to those who didn't wear them the first time around. And while taller may be better for some of these novice wearers, wedge heels do not have to be a mile high to be in style. Opt for a lower wedge, and you won't fall behind.

Here’s a few of our favourite styles – straight from the Irish high street.
