Q. I love shorts but my legs don't. Every spring I long to wear a stylish pair of shorts but, no matter how many pairs I try on, I just can’t seem to find the right style to suit my figure. Do you have any tips for buying shorts?

A. It’s the question on every woman's lips, to wear or not to wear shorts. They first made their appearance on the catwalks last autumn and were immediately snapped up as a top trend by the fashion-conscious set - those with perfect pins that is. The rest of us were more cautious, not entirely sure corn beef legs and stilettos were going to be our choice look of the season. And far from being a short-lived fad, the look is set to continue into the summer. So if you want to make sure you look the part, we have a run-down on how to achieve it - and you don't need a model figure to carry it off.

PEAR SHAPE: Try a looser fit through the legs. Structured khakis balance proportions while simple patterns don't add bulk. A low- rise, short-hem combo does wonders. Look for waistbands with extra details, like pleats or double-layer designs. Shorts that finish mid-thigh or longer will be the most slimming shape for you. If your thighs are heavy, avoid prints, horizontal stripes, bright colors and cargo pockets. They will only draw more attention.

PETITE: The very young can get away with the big catwalk trend of shortie shorts and high heels. For those who are young at heart but not in years the key with this trend is not to go 'short', just shorter. Don't go for styles any longer than an inch above your thigh, and always opt for tapered or slim tailored shapes that don't add bulk to your shape. ALWAYS wear wedges with your shorts, and take advantage of the leg-lengthening powers of short shorts. On the top half, keep it simple, and avoid any excess bulk and layers.

ATHLETIC/BOYISH: Slim-cut styles that finish nearer your knee are the worst shape for this body type. Luckily, fluid shapes are a big trend in shorts this year, so there are plenty styles that will suit your frame. Show off your slim legs in shorter styles but look for turn-ups and tailored shapes that will add bulk. On the top half, avoid tight tops and instead go for floaty fabrics that will help to create a more feminine silhouette.

APPLE SHAPE: If you're small, don't be tempted to try to cover your legs with below-the-knee shorts, as these will make your legs appear even shorter. Instead go for styles that finish just above or on the knee, covering your thighs, but still showing-off the slimmest part of your leg. If you have a large stomach, avoid fiat-front shorts. Stick to pleated styles that will camouflage your stomach. Adding a shirt or a cardigan over a vest top will help to skim over the tummy and waist area, and give a more streamlined shape.
