Q: This will be our first Valentine's Day together for me and my bride of seven months. I'd like to surprise her with a gift of lingerie. Frankly, I'm clueless. Can you help?

A: You're not as clueless as you may think. Wanting to surprise your wife with something feminine and flirty on Valentines Day is romantic but a potential minefield. The approach of Valentine's Day sends husbands and boyfriends across the region into a lingerie-buying frenzy. Not to mention a state of total confusion. And it's no surprise. With around 80% of the adult female population wearing the wrong bra size, what chance do the men have of getting it right?

So, forget about those nasty, nylon underwear sets and get something classy to get her in the mood for love and romance on February 14. We realise it isn't easy picking the right thing when you find the nerve to go into a lingerie store. There is so much choice, it's difficult to know where to start. So before you hit the shops, here’s a few things to keep in mind…

Do judge a book by its cover. For a woman who is more comfortable in modestly styled cotton or flannel, don't buy skimpy satin. A better choice would be a camisole and boy-short set - sexy but not too revealing.

Don't always think pink (or red). If you know a woman doesn't like pink (or red), don't suppose she'll change her mind just because it's Valentine's Day. She'll be far happier with lingerie in her favorite color - black, white or any hue in between.

Be size savvy. If it's too small, she won't wear it. If it's too big, she'll think you think she's fat. So take a discreet peek into her lingerie drawer for a check on her actual sizes - tops and bottoms.

If she says she hates her thighs, she really means it. Just about every woman has a sore point - thighs, tummy, bust, bottom. You may not agree, but that's beside the point if you want to score points with your gift. Select lingerie that will accentuate her positives while helping to hide what she perceives as the negatives.
