Fashion designer Oscar de la Renta thinks Michelle Obama should have chosen American designers for her recent American state visit.

The American First Lady's wardrobe rarely attracts criticism: she has a style blog, 'Mrs. O', an upcoming book of the same name dedicated to her chic yet practical style and labels have apparently been made or broken by her patronage.

However designer De la Renta is not happy with Obama's decision to wear not one, but two British based designers, Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton, and Roksanda Ilincic, during Chinese President Hu Jintao's state visit to the US.

According to the Telegraph he said: "My understanding, is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade - American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?"

However the New York based designer added: "I'm not talking about my clothes, my business. I'm old, and I don't need it. But there are a lot of young people, very talented people here who do."
