Q. I’m very embarrassed about my saggy knees and tend to wear trousers all the time in an attempt to cover them up. Have you any style tricks to help me disguise my knees – without having to resort to wearing trousers all the time.
A. Victoria Beckham (who has not even made it to her 40s yet but is preternaturally thin), Teri Hatcher, Demi Moore, Madonna and Nicole Kidman are fine examples of very skinny women who have all been mocked for their gnarled knees. And they’re not alone - even the staggeringly beautiful Kate Moss has problem knees, which seem to have taken all the punishment of her rock-chick lifestyle.
A woman‘s style changes with time. But older needn‘t mean frumpy or unfashionable.
A savvy dresser knows how to utilize the hottest trends by wearing what suits her body - and learning how to disguise problem areas such as wrinkled knees. Baggy looking knees are an inevitable sign of ageing - as we get older, our skin naturally loses collagen and elastin, the natural substances which hold the skin together and give it plumpness. Meanwhile, muscles, which help keep the skin taut, can slacken if you don‘t exercise, leading to characteristic baggy skin around the knee.
Legs do not improve with age, but I believe you can still wear skirts that fall just below the knee if the rest of your leg is in relatively good nick. For someone suffering from terminally bad orange-peel thighs, and I know I‘m not the only one - capri pants and Bermuda shorts are great options in the summer months and these always look youthful and on-trend. The new calf length dress is a great style for you – not only is it bang on trend – it will allow you to wear a form fitting dress while still showing off a bit of leg. Once winter comes along you can show off your legs in over the knee boots and opaque tights but make sure that you wear something that covers your arms, such as a fitted leather jacket, because this clever styling trick will help to balance out your proportions.
Problem solved.
