Cold-weather cool: Winter's well and truly on its way - with dark nights, blanket snow and plummeting temperatures. So get wrapped up, stay warm - and do it in style says Georgina Heffernan.

Q. Now that the temperature has dropped and the entire country seems to be covered in snow – I’m having something of a fashion meltdown. I have no idea how I can manage to look stylish, while wrapped in layers and layers of clothing. Help!

A. With temperatures so cold that you're praying for puff jackets to make a return, our thoughts turn to all things cosy. Suddenly, that oversized cardigan you have been leaving at the back of the wardrobe in case it adds pounds to your hips starts to look very appealing. But don't fear - you don't have to bury your figure beneath layers of fleece in order to keep warm this winter. From supermarkets to the high street, there are plenty of smart looks that will guarantee warmth and style during the cold snap.

If there’s one way to stay warm and retain the glam factor, it's a fur coat. A faux fur coat that is. While celebrities like Catherine Zeta- Jones and Kim Kardashian continue to cause controversy by donning real fur, the high street prefers to fake it. Whatever your style or budget, you'll find a huge selection of fur coats to choose from this season. From elegant 1950s Mad Men versions, to those reminiscent of 1970s boho chic, the choice is endless - but if you're not quite ready to entirely cover up your limbs, this season's cape is the cover-up for you.

Coats and jumpers will keep you cosy but it's your accessories that do the hard work in keeping out the cold. Patterned or jewel-bright, winter scarves are also perfect when you are braving the elements. Jumbo scarves in oversized textured styles and ridiculously long lengths were key on the catwalks at Topshop Unique and Kenzo. Team with skinny trousers, jeans or leggings to balance out proportions and avoid the abominable snowman look. For the cosiest – and most glamorous headwear, the trapper or 'deerstalker' hat has been sported by the likes of Madonna, Elle Macpherson and Lily Allen to beat the cold. Stylish and warm – now what could be better?
