What to wear to a winter wedding

Q I always struggle with what to wear to winter weddings. I don't want to freeze to death, but I also don't like to look frumpy. I’d love to wear a little black number but I’m not sure if a black dress is appropriate. Any ideas?

A. Winter weddings pose a sartorial dilemma for most women. Namely, how do you look chic and keep warm at the same time? First, realize that even if it's freezing out, you'll spend most of your time indoors, so leave the puffy parks at home. A warm cape or bolero jacket should be enough to see you from car to door. Even though it might be very cold outside you have to remember that inside it's likely to be warmer than normal.
You'll need a jacket or coat but remember that you'll still want a beautiful dress underneath once you're inside.

Layering has been everywhere on the catwalk for the past couple of seasons, and the idea really comes into its own when you are too hot one moment, chilly the next. It's always good to have an extra layer for dramatic changes in temperature. If you are stepping outside into night air after an evening's dancing, to watch fireworks or wave off a bride and groom, you'll be glad of your wrap. And while you can get away with bare, strappy heels year-round, closed-toe pumps with opaque tights are every bit as fashionable -- and a lot warmer.

With church bells ringing and a crowd of guests gathered for the happy couple, the bride is the only woman who should be centre of attention on the big day. Ensure that you don't steal the limelight in a too short/low-cut/extravagant number and steer well clear of white. It is much easier to get away with black especially if it is velvet/tulle/a swishy fabric and if you add flashy accessories (or a nice tartan, perchance?) For a summer wedding, black is only acceptable if you are a waiter, waitress or Goth. Other popular winter colour themes are cranberry and chartreuse, black and white, gold, silver or champagne- if you are feeling brave. Alternatively, monochrome is a key look at the moment, which is great as it's both flattering and catwalk-hot.

Accessorise with killer heels and a bold bright clutch bag for added punch.
