Q: I’m in the process of putting together my new winter wardrobe and I’d love to invest in a fashionable cape. I’ve seen them in all of the glossy magazines and high street stores - but the problem is that I‘m not quite sure what to wear it with. Have you any advice?

A: Let's be honest, it's not often a trend comes along that fits all shapes and sizes.

But this season's cape could be a wardrobe solution for everyone this winter. Perfect for slipping on over jeans or a pencil skirt, it’s an easy way to update your outfit. Looking stylish is obviously a must when you‘re shopping for new clothes, so going for a cape will definitely allow you to look trendy, feel cosy and will certainly ensure you're bang on trend. And it doesn't hurt that capes are flattering to many body types because they create a 'T' shape, adding a little volume to the top and creating the illusion of a slimmer, straight bottom.

Think of this autumn's capes as the updated version of ponchos, which took retail by storm a couple years ago. Their swingy silhouette is of-the-moment, especially when topping slim jeans, trousers and skirts. It's all about movement and a touch of 'swing'. If you're going to accommodate the sweater dress or layering, you need volume over it. That's where capes and other coats that stand away from the body come in. Plus, these lighter-weight looks transition nicely from warm fall days into cooler weather.

Our favourite cape on the catwalk was a bright red creation by Issa, worn with a pair of skinny black trousers and the high street has been quick to come up with its own versions. The Portia cape at Monsoon, €185.00, is perfect if you are going for a bohemian vibe but if you want something a little more serviceable - Penny’s military inspired cape, a steal at only €30, should certainly see you through the cold snap. When you are putting your look together, remember to mix wide capes with drainpipe denim and long boots for the ultimate in casual chic. Short skirts with capes are too twee. The skirt length for capes should be mid-calf and slightly A- line. Cinch it in and team with skinny jeans and heels for the perfect statement silhouette.

Perfect.
