Q. I’m a busy mum of three and during the last few years, I feel that I’ve really lost my way with fashion. Between the demands of motherhood and my career, it seems as if there’s little or no time to focus on myself. Can you suggest a glamorous - yet childproof - look for busy mums like me?

A. I blame those Hollywood yummy mummies like Gwen Stefani, Heidi Klum, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Katie Holmes who always look immaculately groomed, whether they are collecting the kids from school or dazzling on the red carpet. Even when they are snapped unaware by the paparazzi they continue to shine, no doubt thanks to a team of stylists and personal shoppers. But for ‘normal’ women , like you and I, who don’t have bulging bank accounts or a fleet of staff - is it ever really possible to look glamorous once the kids arrive?

These days woman are shaking off the fuddy duddy image of wearing baggy bottomed tracksuits and shapeless leggings -now modern mums are more likely to look flirty and fab, rather than dowdy and dull. And the good news is that it’s easy to transform your look - once you know how.

Fashion editors will tell you that every wardrobe needs a few classic staples to work. You need a good coat, stylish boots, well-fitting jeans, a beautiful pair of shoes, a pretty dress, a well-cut pair of trousers and some comfortable lingerie. These items should be stunning, and made to last. And evaluating how great a role a purchase will play in your wardrobe is equally important.

The key to wise spending is to know your style. Having a clear sense of what works for you and what would look better on someone with another body or another life is vital.

Your basic wardrobe should be made up of high quality garments and if you think that you can’t afford clothes like that - think again. If you stop spending your money on endless tops and shirts from the high street, you can afford to splash out. Clever shoppers don't have more money than everyone else; they just shop less, spending their money on beautiful things that won't date. They then update these essentials every season with cheap and cheerful accessories that keep them looking sharp.

Start by investing in a great pair of boot cut jeans in a dark denim wash, which is flattering to most figures .The white shirt is an all-time classic that can be worn at an important business meeting as well as at the school gate. If you are picking up the kids from school the best look is casual-smart.

Choose a jersey pant with wide waistband and slightly wider leg, and layer with an oversized T-shirt. Throw on a soft knit vest, and a scarf for a nice pop of colour. Try cargo pants with an embellished T-shirt. Or what about a tunic dress, shirt dress or maxi-dress teamed with beaded flat sandals and a cardigan?

All it takes is a little imagination and a few well cut basics - and before you know it you’ll be looking more yummy than slummy.
