Q. I love this summer’s maxi dress trend, but as a size 14, I can’t seem to find one to flatter my figure. I’ve tried quite a few on, in all of the high street stores, but most of them make me look as if I’m wearing a tent. Have you any suggestions as to the shape and style I should be shopping for?

A. The maxi dress is this summers biggest hit, so the good news is that there is a mind blowing selection of styles and shapes to suit nearly every figure and body type. For larger ladies, the maxi dress is actually a godsend. This dress will cover chunky thighs, large bottoms and thick waists; you just have to make sure that you pick a design that will balance out your proportions. Yes, you’ve heard that phrase about a million times but what does that actually mean?

OK, if most of your weight is distributed at the bottom half of your body, do choose a style that skims over your generous curves but remember to balance it out by making sure that the top half of your dress hugs your torso, as this will give you a great silhouette.

Be wary of excess fabric. By swathing yourself in acres of material you can end up looking like you're 6 months pregnant, so look for dresses that emphasises your waist to help define your figure.

If you have chunky arms look for a dress with sleeves. The sleeves should be in a lightweight fabric, such as chiffon or voile because you don’t want to come over all hot and bothered during the warmer days. If you are going to wear sleeves, remember to
flash a little cleavage or leg ( perhaps a side split?) otherwise you may just look as if you are an extra in a period drama, which is never a great look unless you are Kate Winslet.

If you are blessed with an ample cleavage go for styles with cap sleeves or thick straps, to conceal a supportive bra. The odd ruffle to distract the eye is fine, but be wary of garish prints. Some work. Other, however, can make you look (and feel) enormous. Instead, choose a garment in a subtle shade such as navy or opt for a pretty print in a subtle tone.

To finish your look, team with flats or wedges (never wear heels with a maxi) and a pair of shades for the ultimate in laid back cool. A maxi is supposed to ooze a barefoot hippie vibe, so keep accessories to a minimum and let your hair down.

After all, it’s summer.
