Q. I have noticed that there’s a lot of denim about on the high street this season and, although I’ve always worn denim jeans, I’m reluctant to buy other high fashion denim items because I’m not sure how to wear them. Do you have any advice?

A. Unless you've been hiding under a bush, you can't have failed to notice the recent celebrity trend for dressing down. They're all at it - Kate Moss, Cheryl Cole and Alexa Chung have been gracing the pages of glossy magazines in their denims - with expensive accessories, of course. The catwalk shows from Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs offered their take on denim designs, from straight-legged drainpipes to denim maxi dresses. But it's the eclectic blend of thrown-together denim chic mixed with smarter detailing that I love.

You're just as likely to see a star attending a premiere in their skinny jeans as a designer frock these days. Of course, you already own and wear denim and this spring there are a plethora of hot new styles for you to choose from.

A perfectly-cut pair of jeans has been in every fashion follower's kit for three or four seasons, with J Brand’s slender fitting version as the ultimate purchase. Marc Jacobs and Chloe showed us patchwork jeans and jackets in their latest collection, while models emerged wearing denim jackets adorned with gold beads, and wide denim flares on the Gaultier catwalk.

Calvin Klein had a denim suit in powder blue stonewash with pleated jeans and labels such as Chloe, Ralph Lauren, House of Holland and even D&G have championed the ‘double denim’ look. Personally, I think that head to toe denim looks tacky, instead, try incorporating it with other fabrics such as floral prints or neutrals.

A denim sundress can look amazing teamed with oversized shades and wedge heels or a faded denim jacket can add an individual touch to a pretty tea dress.
