Skincare company Trilogy is renowned for its natural, hardworking products and ethical business approach.

The brand was founded by sisters Sarah Gibbs and Catherine de Goot, who set up the company following Sarah's discovery of Rosehip Oil, on which many of their products are based.

We caught up with Sarah to talk about the philosophy behind the brand, the benefits of Rosehip Oil and what's in store for Trilogy in the future.

Q. Sarah McIntyre: Could you tell me a bit about the reason you started Trilogy and what's the philosophy behind the company?

A. Sarah Gibbs: Like many new ideas our story began with a discovery. I set up a company manufacturing ingredients from plants for the natural supplement and cosmetic industries and during this time I discovered the remarkable skin-loving properties of Rosehip Oil.

I immediately shared my excitement with my beauty journalist sister Catherine. Rosehip Oil was like nothing we'd ever tried before. A pure, natural, un-fragranced oil which absorbed effortlessly into the skin leaving none of the greasy feel one expected from oil, only soft, smooth skin. After several months of trials and research into the science behind it, we were hooked and decided to launch an entire skincare range around this remarkable ingredient.

We launched Trilogy in 2002 with five face care products. Eight years later the range consists of over 40 face, body and hair care products.

Q. SMI: The range is based around the certified organic rosehip oil, can you tell me about the benefits of this product?

A. SB: Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil is a pure, natural and un-fragranced oil which absorbs effortlessly into the skin. It’s 100% natural and helps improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and wrinkles due to its 80% Essential Fatty Acid content. Our Rosehip oil’s powerful natural actives also make it highly effective for other skin concerns including dry and dehydrated skin, ageing skin and uneven skin tone.

I discovered and fell in love with this remarkable golden oil while manufacturing ingredients for the cosmetics industry. It was like nothing my sister Catherine and I had ever tried before. I developed a new way to extract the purest elements from this oil and was excited by the results. Catherine and I knew we’d discovered a future cosmetic star and decided to create an entire skincare range around it. Trilogy was born.

Q. SMI: Which Trilogy products are your personal favourite?

A. SG: That’s a really difficult question as I use all our products. At the moment my favorite’s are the Age Proof range and I particularly love our new CoQ10 Booster Serum, a powerful antioxidant boost that makes your skin feel soft and look radiant.

Q. SMI: What's the process of creating new products like?

A. SG: It’s my sister Catherine de Groot who creates the products working closely with two chemists who we’ve collaborated with from day one. It involves keeping up with the latest natural ingredients and trying out new combinations as well as patience so you get the formula just right. From the outset we set out to create products which deliver results so we work hard to make sure each product that we create is effective as well as being beautiful to use.

Q. SMI: I'm a convert to the Rosehip Oil, and am also impressed by the pocket-friendly prices. Did you always set out to provide affordable skincare that does what it says on the tin?
A. SG: Absolutely. Our aim from day one was to produce high performance natural skincare at accessible prices which was also easily available to the consumer through a range of retail channels. We are now available in pharmacy, department stores and health stores in all our main markets.

Q. SMI: Finally, what's in store for Trilogy in the future?

A. SB: We launched in Ireland towards the end of last year and have loved everything about the experience so we’re committed to growing in Ireland.
