Q. I’m going to a New Years Eve party and I’ve love a show stopping dress that will really get me noticed but I’m on a tight budget. Do you know where I can get a gorgeous party dress that won’t break the bank?

A. If you want to make an impression at the New Year's Eve bash, forget about that little black dress. You can bet the vast majority of female revellers will be sporting one and will hardly stand out from the crowd. Of course black is slimming and elegant - perfect for all sorts of occasions. But when the clock strikes twelve, you just won't get noticed among the sea of black on the dance floor, so opt for something with a little more Oomph!

Of all the days in the year New Years Eve is not the day to play it safe – so opt for something with a little sparkle to make sure you stand out from the crowd.

Luckily, designers and high-street chains alike have outdone themselves in their effort to satisfy our lust for all things glittery, sexy, outrageous and just plain party-tastic – all at a great price.

Heatons, Pennys, TKMaxx and good old Tesco are great choices for party dresses, especially if you are on a tight budget. When you are buying a cheaper dress, remember that you can update it and make it look a little more expensive by adding details such as a ribbon sash or by changing cheap looking buttons – you’ll be surprised at the difference it can make.

If you really want to get noticed, red is the obvious choice for the festive season. Up close it casts a rosy glow on your face, whereas black tends to drain the complexion. When wearing a red dress, try to get the exact shade of lipstick and nail varnish to set it off. But remember, if you are emphasising your lips, the eyes should be subtly made-up in neutrals. Avoid frills and too much lace when opting for red. Keep it simple for maximum impact.

And don't despair if red just isn't your colour. The current crop of metallics are just the thing to add a bit of sparkle to your party look. As a rule, silver doesn't flatter pale skin, so invest in a good fake tan if you're on the pasty side.

Finish your look with an oversized clutch bag, high strappy sandals and my favourite new year’s accessory of all – a cute man to kiss at midnight!

Sparkle and shine well past midnight with these party-perfect pieces – all for under €50.
