Pop powerhouse Whitney Houston's comeback on The X Factor last Sunday night was spoiled by an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction with her dress.

The singer made her first UK TV appearance in 12 years on X Factor but her hotly anticipated performance didn’t exactly go according to plan.

Whitney was noticeably irritated as she struggled with a loose strap on the long silvery dress during a live performance of her latest single Million Dollar Bill. The six-time Grammy winner, backed by a troupe of male dancers, pulled a face when she realised the strap was sticking out.

Her problem followed Robbie Williams' appearance on the ITV show last week, when a wild eyed Robbie struggled to get on stage through a jammed door - in a scene which could have been straight of the film Spinal Tap.

Judges Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue gave Whitney a standing ovation when she finished her routine but the 46 year old star looked distracted during her interview with Irish host Dermot O'Leary.

Seeming flustered, she joked about the trouble with her dress, saying: "I sang my song out of my dress."

But when Dermot asked about her comeback album she seemed confused. After a pause, she said: "Album? It should be released this week."

She then joked of Cowell: "Simon calls me lippy because I say what's on my mind, just like he does."

And when Dermot asked Whitney about the standard of this year's X Factor contestants she paused for several seconds, before saying: "They are young. They have room to grow. Practice, practice, practice."

Miss Houston's CD ‘I Look to You’ went to number one in the US album chart with 305,000 sales.

Recently, Miss Houston gave her first interview in seven years to Oprah Winfrey. She told her how her mother forced her into rehab. She admitted that she would smoke marijuana and crack cocaine at the same time but says she is now drug free.
