Model and television presenter Tyra Banks has explained the decision to place a height restriction on contestants taking part in the next season of 'America's Next Top Model'.

In the next series of the show the hopefuls taking part must be 5ft 7in or under.

Speaking to 'Entertainment Tonight', she said: "I stand for redefining beauty and really opening up the narrow box of what beautiful is."

"When I created the show, I was like, 'We have to have all skin colours, from alabaster to ebony and everything in between'."

"In terms of body type, I had to have plus size models, I had to show a full-figured woman a representation of herself on this show."

"And I also tried to do seasons of just short girls and I got, 'No, no, no' from my beautiful network people, who I love. So I created a Powerpoint presentation and said, 'This is why this season will be successful'."

"And I finally got a yes. It took two years to get a yes, two years. But it's happening."
