Plus size fashion

I’m 22 and a size 18, normally I wear a lot of dark colours to minimize my shape but now that it’s mid summer I really feel out of place in head to toe black.

Do you know of any high street stores that stock trendy, youthful clothes for girls with curves? Also, can you suggest any styles and colours that would work well for summer on a larger frame?

Forget the days when wearing a size 18 equated to a wardrobe of garish patterns, shapeless smocks, or flammable fabrics and get ready to flaunt those curves. Designers are finally giving real women the clothing they deserve; clothing that celebrates the unique shape and beauty of all women, regardless of size.

If you want to try something a little different try Evans.
The Gossip singer Beth Ditto has teamed up with the plus size store to launch her own range of designs, which launched only last week. The collection, Beth Ditto at Evans, is available in sizes 14 to 32 and is inspired by the fashions of the 1980s. It includes prom dresses, sequined tops and wet look leggings; the collection is fun, funky and very fashionable.

If that’s not to your taste, remember that many high street stores such as Dorothy Perkins and Marks & Spencer go right up to size 28, so it’s relatively easy to find beautiful clothes - whatever your size. Debenhams also stock a selection of larger sizes in labels such as Red Herring, Debut and many other lines throughout the store.

If you want to shop on line, Marisota.ie brings direct to your laptop stylish women’s clothing designed to flatter your figure in size 12-32. This website offers convenient delivery to home or work, an express delivery service and easy returns. The site is easy to use with a detailed help section and there’s even a customer service team based in Dublin to help any internet novices.

Even though you may feel comfortable in it, black is really not the most flattering colour for your shape. Black trousers, dresses, skirts and other plus size clothing is not necessarily the most slimming or figure flattering on a woman's body – and it’s SO drab!

A great outfit is as much about proportion, cut and overall style as it is about colour. Monotone coloured outfits can be just as flattering, if not more, than plain old boring black. Wearing additional colours around your face will bring attention to your skin tone, face shape and eye colour.

For easy summer styles, why not try a feminine maxi dress or pretty flowing kaftans that will skim over your curves. Opt for colours like deep blue, purple or jade and go for bigger accessories to balance your frame. Also, try to avoid fabrics with big patterns as they’ll only make you look larger.

Yes, women’s plus size clothing has indeed come a long way today. Now there’s an incredible amount of choice - from the high street to designer labels and online shopping. So perhaps it’s time to bin the black and embrace a new colourful you.

After all, who doesn’t want to wear beautiful clothes that will get them noticed?
