How to wear a denim jacket

I’ve seen a few stars such as Rihanna, Agyness Deyn, Alexa Chung and Kate Moss wearing stone washed denim jackets. I’m always keen to stay on trend - but how can I wear one without looking like I escaped from a 1980’s pop video?

Just thinking about an 80s style revival is enough to send a shiver down my spine. Let's face it; nobody wants to look like Krystle Carrington from Dynasty! But now the clothes are filtering on to the high street it's not as scary as I first thought. All the 80s touches are there, like shoulder pads and acid-washed denim, but this time round it's much more tasteful.

It’s certainly true that fashion comes full circle but who would have predicted the return of that 1980’s favourite - the denim jacket. Back then, they were the epitome of cool and everyone from Tiffany to Kylie wore them with high waisted jeans, crop tops and poodle perms.

However, if you want to wear the look today, it’s best to leave the ‘Frankie Say Relax’ t-shirts and frosted pink lipstick at home. If you are brave enough to slip on a denim jacket, you’ll need to employ some clever styling techniques to bring the look up to date.

I love wearing my denim jacket over a cute floral tea dress and this is one of the best ways to wear the look. They also work particularly well with long flowing maxi dresses or a plain sun dress. If you are looking for a casual but comfortable look, you can also team a denim jacket with a plain white T-shirt and a simple pair of khaki’s.

Never and I say - NEVER - wear a denim jacket with a denim skirt or jeans. Denim on denim will only make you look like a Jerry Springer Show audience member.

Finally, I recommend a classic style: an old-school Levi’s jacket, in classic ranch-hand style. Don’t muck about with it.

Don’t go for one with a million buttons with a weird tie dye effect. You’re already treading the thin line between style and stupidity, so don’t topple over the edge by trying too hard.
