La Roche Posay XY Homme Soap-Free Emollient Shaving Foam

Many times over the past three months I've considered taking a picture of my can of this stuff and carrying it around in my wallet. But the thought that I might get caught looking at it on public transport and saying "You complete me" has been a powerful deterrent. I wonder, though, just how long I'll hold out. In the words of Barry White: "We've had it hard, we've had it cold, we've had it rough. It never changed a thing between the two of us."

Every morning I look in my door mirror and wink at the can sitting on the sink. It hasn't nodded back or fired some playful foam in my direction, but I think it's only a matter of time - such are the magical powers underneath that nozzle.

Since almost beheading myself for the first time at the age of 14, I've used countless shaving foams and I've found most of them to be in and around the same 'did the job' standard. XY is a pricier option, but it makes getting out of the bed in the morning something to look forward to. Soap-free and with puss-soothing allantonin (a natural healing agent), it offers a truly memorable shave and you don't need very much - press the button very gently or you'll be treating the rats in the drains every day as well.

The foam is designed for dry and sensitive skin, but any guy could use this and find nothing to whinge about. There's also a gel, to help people who suffer from ingrown hairs. I haven't tried it yet, but a love triangle is only a matter of time.

La Roche Posay Soap-Free Emollient Shaving Foam available from pharmacies nationwide, €10.00.
