Dressing for pear shaped bodies

I’m a classic pear shape and have trouble finding clothes to suit my figure. Dresses can tend to make me look bottom heavy, whereas, some trousers just seem to make my bottom half look larger than it actually is.

Have you any advice for making the most of my figure?

I’m a pear shape too, so I know the pitfalls and, indeed, advantages of having an - erm- ample lower half. I’ve yet to meet a man who does not appreciate a woman with a little extra curvature, so trust me, it’s all good.

A lot of Irish women would fall into the pear shaped category but in order to make the most of your curves, it’s important to know how to dress to suit your unique body shape.

With the right outfit a pear can look extremely feminine with a sexy behind. And stars such as Jennifer Lopez and Scarlet Johansson are living examples of how to work this particular body type to the max!

Pears generally have a smaller chest and shoulders and wider hips. So if that sounds like you, you should wear clothes that minimise hips and draw attention up towards the neckline. Dresses and skirts should be A-line or flared at the hem with a side zip to minimize extra volume around the hips.

Do not wear anything too tight on your bottom half - opt for fabrics that skim the figure instead of anything too clingy. Trousers that sit on your waist will make your bottom look much bigger than it is, especially from behind, so choose a pair that sit just below the waist line.

Jackets should stop at or above your hips, opt for styles with a nipped in waist or belt to emphasise your figure. The good news is that you can wear most shirts and T-shirts that more top heavy girls can’t, so make the most of it and show off your figure.

Try wearing full skirts teamed with fitted tops, as this will balance and flatter your figure, with a fashionable fifties twist. Adding detail to the top half can be brilliant at drawing the eye up the body away from the problem area. Tops with capped sleeves or three-quarter length sleeves will also balance out your profile.

Also, try out bold necklaces or dramatic scarves to draw the attention to your upper half – if that fails a plunging neckline will usually do the trick…

The only rule would be to try not to wear tops that end in a straight line across your widest part. Boat and slash necks that create a horizontal line across your neck, making your shoulders appear wider will balance out your bottom.

Follow this simple advice and, trust me, you’ll not only feel great being a pear – you’ll also look good enough to eat.
