Beating the Christmas Bulge

After a particularly indulgent Christmas, I was shocked to discover that I’ve put on half a stone in weight. Now, thanks to my sweet tooth, none of my clothes fit and I have a bulging belly that I am desperate to disguise. Have you any advice on how I can hide the few extra pounds that I put on over the festive season?

Well, if it’s any consolation, you are not alone and the weight gain is probably only temporary. The good news is that you can still manage to look trendy and trim with a few clever styling tips. My favourite trick to disguise a pot belly is to wear a beautiful flowing scarf over, for example, a simple grey or black dress. The long line of the scarf will draw attention away from your problem area while jazzing up an otherwise dull outfit. A long pashmina casually falling gently over your tummy can hide a multitude of sins while looking young and Bohemian.

The simple fact of it is that if you wear clothing that is slightly too big for you, you will look as if you’ve lost weight. If your clothing is a bit small, you are going to look like you’ve gained. Keep this in mind and look for styles that flow- rather than cling. Opt for flattering empire line styles or smock tops as these are the perfect shape to disguise a large tum. Wear a dramatic necklace or colourful scarf at your neckline as this will help to draw the eye upwards - away from your problem area.

Disguising the tummy is best done by wearing darker colours below the waist. Also it’s important not to buy clothes which are too tight fitting and show up your tummy area, if it fits everywhere else but is pulling over your tummy then reject it and move on. A bit of draping sometimes helps and for short waisted people wearing longer tops covering the area can be good.

Also, if you have a formal event coming up and you need a little extra help then try some support underwear. Magic knickers, thigh trimmers, corsets, bodies can sometimes be the answer for a special event under evening wear or a special occasion outfit. OK, they may not be sexy but they will shave inches off your figure in a matter of seconds.

Finally, consider wearing at least a two inch heel whenever possible. Not only is the heel becoming required in the workplace in order achieve a professional look, but it will also add even more length to your body. Worn under slacks, jeans, or with a skirt, heels will ultimately make your legs appear longer and more toned.
