Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has defended the fur trade saying it is fine because the "beasts'' that the fur comes from would "kill us if they could''.
The Chanel designer said it was "childish'' to discuss the topic of using fur in fashion in a world where eating meat was normal.
German-born Lagerfeld, 75, said that he did not wear fur. But he said hunters "make a living having learnt nothing else than hunting...killing those beasts who would kill us if they could''.
Animals should be slaughtered "nicely" if at all possible, said Lagerfeld, who admitted to being queasy about eating meat. His remarks have angered anti fur groups, such as Peta, who campaign against the use of fur in the clothing trade.
