Fashion Fix with Imelda May

Imelda May
Imelda May

Dublin-born rockabilly singer Imelda May is famed for her seductive, powerful voice and burlesque inspired performances.

Having shared the stage with greats such as Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Bryan Ferry, The Supremes, Sister Sledge, Elvis Costello and Elton John, her star is on the up and up.

We caught up with the stylish singer to get an insight into her thoughts on fashion.

You're clearly a fan of fashion. Do you enjoy experimenting with your look?

Yeah, of course. I love having fun with clothes, definitely.
I like to have fun with strong colour, patterns and prints.
My Mam was a dressmaker and has instilled in me a love of fashion from a very young age.

Who is your fashion icon or your greatest influence in matters of style?

I don’t really have one icon but I do love the clothes and style of the 50s. They seem to suit my shape and I think are very flattering to women’s curves in general.

What is your essential beauty item that must be in your handbag at all times?

Red lipstick but also black liquid eyeliner, eyebrow pencil, and some good perfume are a must.

What is your favourite item of clothing that you've ever purchased?

I have lots of favourites but my first leopard print coat I bought when I was 15 started a love that has lasted a long time. It’s currently on loan to my 17 year old cousin who’s now caught the leopard bug too. Oh, and a good waist cinching belt; I have loads of them.

How important is fashion in the world of the music/film industry?

Very important. It all seems to go hand in hand, and why not? It makes life more interesting. I love watching old movies for the fashion as much as the movie - especially film noir. I love the old B movie poster styles, too. They’re great fun.

How would you describe your personal style?

I’ll leave you to do that! I just like what I like.

Who is your favourite designer? And your favourite high street store?

I find designer wear too expensive (although I’d love to own a Rouland Mouret dress someday – beautiful). So I usually mix clothes from Penneys and Dunnes Stores with charity shop finds. I also love shopping in Retro in Georges St. Arcade when I’m home. They stock Collectif, Stop Staring, Lucky 13, Hell Bunny, What Katie Did, and other labels I love.

What is your favourite city to shop in and why?

Apart from Dublin and London it has to be Los Angeles. I love the charity shops/thrift stores there. I’ve gotten some fabulous vintage clothes for just a few quid.

What do you feel best wearing?

My own style. I’ve tried other styles before and for a short while thought I should ‘grow up’ and conform, but felt very drab as it wasn’t my thing. So I’m happiest in my own concoctions. I’m also partial to a red shoe or two!

What is the best style advice you have been given?

My Auntie Kathleen once told me while she stood in 4 ½ inch killer heels, "Pride feels no pain". I love that!
