Model Heidi Klum has sparked controversy by deciding to dress up as a scary version of the Hindu goddess Kali.

According to Vogue, a number of Hindu speakers are calling for the supermodel to publicly apologise for her use of the costume.

The magazine's website said that acclaimed Hindu and Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed released a statement saying that Goddess Kali is not to be used in clubs for publicity stunts or thrown around loosely for dramatic effects.

Klum said of the costume: "It was actually my assistant's idea."

"My husband and I were in India last year, so she said, 'Why don't you do an Indian goddess? Like a scary Indian goddess?' And I said 'OK'."
