Jack McGinn is the President of the Irish Second-Level Students' Union, and is currently in his first year of college in University of Limerick. He is here with some words for the Leaving Cert Class of 2025 as well as some news...
It’s that time of year again when students are about to sit their Junior and Leaving Cert exams. Here at the Irish Second-Level Students’ Union, we are delighted to collaborate with RTÉ to bring you blogs written by students across Ireland each day as they finish their exams.
If you are taking exams this year, I know how nerve-wracking it can be. You are naturally going to feel nervous, everyone does. It is also an exciting time, one chapter of your life is finishing and another is about to start.
I think the best tip, which you can use in every subject, is to read the question, and then read it again. If you understand the question, and understand what it is asking you to do, you are one step closer to success.
Another great tip I got was; if a question is not going well, move on and come back later if you have time. When you come back later, it might make more sense!
In subjects like Maths, the Low Partial Credits are really important. Things like getting the formula down, and inputting one correct value can often be heavily rewarded during the marking.
I think having a small snack to bring into the exam is really helpful, some jellies and dark chocolate work well for some!
I want to wish everyone the best of luck. It’s really important to remember that the exams do not define you. So many people end up going down different paths, not just the CAO. There are so many alternative options into courses, apprenticeships, and careers now.
What is for you, won’t pass you by. All you can do is your best, and it will all work out in the end - it always does.
