With thanks to our friends at the Irish Irish Second-Level Students' Union we will continue the Leaving Cert Diary series throughout the exams.
It's the place where young people tell us what they thought in their own words.
It Must Be Love...Coincidentally, both part of the Music exam’s Aural Skills question and my thoughts when I opened the Composition paper today.
The general feeling this afternoon amongst my fellow music students (all of whom are now finished – oh, the envy) was that it was quite a nice paper. It certainly felt that way when against all odds, Bohemian Rhapsody came up as a long question. Personally I thought the set works section of the exam was very manageable - even the dreaded Barry question.
The Irish listening question threw me for a bit of a loop, but I expected that, traditional music very much not being my strong point. My old friend ‘Influences on North America’ came up as one of the essays, and I know a lot of people will have been delighted to see sean-nós singing as well. As I mentioned before, I thought the aural skills question was very nice.
Moving onto the much-anticipated Composition paper, I was very pleasantly surprised at how accessible the melody was. No upbeat, and a comparatively easy key signature. The backing chords question was a bit odd with all its syncopation but I didn’t have to use any mad chords so I’ll count that as a win.
Overall, I hope most people will agree that today’s music exam was a success – congratulations to everyone who’s finished today!
