Leaving Cert Diary: Auf Wiedersehen Deutsch - hello weekend!

That's another week done for the Leaving Cert Class of 2023 and for some it's nearly all over.

Today, Construction Studies and German were tackled and Conall tells us how he got on in the latter below. But, starting at the top, Mohammad was happy with Higher Level German as you can see from his video diary above.

With thanks to our friends at the Irish Second-Level Students' Union we will continue the Leaving Cert Diary series throughout the exams.

It's the place where young people tell us what they thought in their own words.

Conall left the exam feeling confident

Auf weidersehen Deutsch! Todays paper was overall very approachable, not many surprises and a lot of it was easy to follow accessible to myself and most candidates. Both comprehensions were reasonable and didn't contain abstract vocabulary, dealing with friends relationships and the negative involving music festivals.

In the first written section I’d do the Computer Games-related question. The first two parts were quite standard but the final part required you do discuss the advantages and disadvantages of large IT Firms in Ireland, something which I didn’t have prepared and had to make I up on the spot. In the final section I choose to do the letter, partially because it is less questions to answer, completing 4 paragraphs rather than 5 in the Question B option.

The letter pulled from many topics including, things in my area, and how I relax, how climate change has affected Ireland, and the problems of this. Topically it asked about the proposal for nightclubs to remain open to 6pm, feeding into Germany's night time culture, another area unprepared but I took points from my alcohol and drugs notes. The aural exam has been received well by many sitting it also.

I and I’m sure many others will have left the exam feeling generally confident, and for many it is their last or one of the last exams, another reason to be glad.
