Generation €uro: Enter the economics competition now!

Calling all TY and Fifth Year economics students from across Ireland!

You are invited to put your knowledge to the test at this year's Generation €uro Students’ Awards, from the Central Bank of Ireland in conjunction with the European Central Bank (ECB).

Teams are asked to step into the role of the ECB’s Governing Council, where they have the task of performing an economic analysis and setting what they believe is an appropriate interest rate for the euro area.

With everything on lockdown the best thing is that teams can participate in the competition virtually while studying from home or together as a team when they return to school.

Students enter the competition in teams of three to five, with a nominated teacher acting as their mentor. Participants are tested over three different rounds, a quiz, a written analysis and a presentation, and teams can complete each stage virtually. The winning team will receive a €500 voucher and a trophy for their school.

Interested students should register for the competition at www.generationeuro.eu

The closing date for registrations to compete in the first round is 5 February.

Entering the competition is easy. If possible, I would encourage your school to enter at least one team. To take part, students should assemble a team of between three and five people and nominate one teacher as a mentor. A teacher may mentor more than one team.

The quiz consists of 30 multiple-choice questions covering various aspects of the euro area and monetary policy.  Students may complete the quiz in more than one sitting. Before starting, teams can practice with a trial version of the quiz.

To help prepare for the quiz, you will find lesson plans and other resources HERE. Further information is available on the Central Bank of Ireland Website.

Last year's winners were Sutton Park School.

The competition comprises of three rounds:

Round One is OPEN from now until 5 February you register and complete online quiz

Round Two is from 5 February to 19 March 2021 and will involve competition of the assignment

Round Three teams will need to make their presentations at the National Final on 28 April.

The top scoring teams from Round One will progress to Round Two and three finalist teams will compete in the National Final at the end of April 2021, which may take place at the Central Bank of Ireland in Dublin.

The schools that successfully complete each round will be publicised on the Central Bank of Ireland website, social media channels and in national/local media.

Prizes
The national winners will receive a specially commissioned glass trophy for their school in recognition of their achievement. Individual prizes and certificates will also be awarded to each finalist.
