As Storm Éowyn blows across Ireland, it's a good time to celebrate some unsung heroes who work 24/7 off the coast of Ireland - let's hear it for the weather buoys!
The Irish Marine Data Buoy Observation Network is managed by the Marine Institute in collaboration with Met Éireann and is designed to improve weather forecasts and safety at sea around Ireland.
The offshore buoys provide information on wave height, wind strength and temperatures. Real-time data is sent via satellite link through to Met Éireann and the wider European MET services.
