The Science of Sense Podcast is back for a 3rd series, and this time it's all about FOOD. The new six-part series from RTÉjr is presented by Hazel Bermingham and Professor Theodore Bumbledumm.
For teachers, we will have extra resources and great ways to include it in your daily lessons.
The series explores the science behind the food we need for our bodies to thrive. The presenters, along with a team of Junior scientists, explore the science of food through interviews, field visits, soundscapes, music, and conversations.
Listen to the first show on Proteins up top and subscribe on RTÉ, Apple and Spotify.
We find out six key food groups across the six shows:

The programmes incorporate thinking and talking prompts which can be used by teachers to promote 'higher order thinking prompts' that move beyond facts into encouraging wondering and thinking. These help support children to predict, invent, problem-solve, and make connections..
Teachers/ Educator can download the activity sheets here:
- Episode 1 - Protein
- Episode 2 - Vitamins and Mineral
- Episode 3 - Sugar
- Episode 4 - Micro biomes
- Episode 5 - Carbohydrates
- Episode 6 - Fats
Each episode is a scientific explanation of these food groups and an insight into different food cultures, food history, and sustainability. The episodes include a visit to TU Dublin School of Food Science and Environmental Health to meet a food scientist, a trip to meet with a sustainable food producer, a food waste tip and a recipe for young listeners to try at home.
Subjects explored in The Science of Sense Food programmes are related to the National School curriculum.
The programmes are designed around the curriculum's objective to develop key skills, such as:
- Exploring
- Observing
- Thinking
- Communicating
- Making - that's the tasty part!
Thinking and talking prompts are all outlined in The Science of Sense accompanying worksheets, to further link and integrate the programmes with the national school curriculum.
