Mental numbers

Today Múinteor Ray taught us about mental maths. That is maths that we do without using pens or pencils.

Activity 1: Guess My Number Game This is one of Múinteor Ray's favourite game! It’s really fun to play, especially with other people.

In his Mental Maths lesson, Múinteoir Ray picked a number in his head from 1 – 100 using the number square below.

Activity 2

The Hungry Hedgehog

Lead the hungry hedgehog on the next page to the fruit by moving one square at a time! This is really cool.

By adding 6 to a number, we can follow a path through the maze. So starting at Square 1, we add 6, to get 7. This means we can move one space to Square 7!

Where do we go from Square 7? Do we go to Square 11 or Square 12 If we add 6 again, this time to 7, and we get 13. So the hedgehog moves one space to Square 13 Now it is your turn.

We need to add 6 to 13 to see what square we move to next. If we look at the maze, it can't be Square 5 or Square 27. 6 + 13 = 19!

So let’s mark Square 19 and let’s find that fruit!
