People used to think these animals were unicorns!

In this visit to Dublin Zoo on Home School Hub, Kelly from the Discovery and Learning team is going to introduce us to a resident of the African Plains - the Oryx.

They live there with some of their more famous neighbours like the giraffes and zebras, but you might not know a lot about them. Have a look at the video above and Kelly will tell you LOADS about them!

Scimitar-horned oryx are classified as extinct in the wild by the IUCN Red List.

The scimitar-horned oryx was once widespread across northern Africa, but have gradually disappeared from the wild due to over-hunting, habitat loss and competition with domestic livestock.

Activity

The best known feature of the Scimitar-horned oryx is their horns that are shaped like a scimitar sword.
