You might have seen on RTÉ News that Ireland has become an Associate Member State of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, exciting new opportunities are emerging to connect Irish students with some of the world's most advanced scientific research organization.
To mark this milestone, CERN openlab - CERN’s public-private partnership mechanism that brings together researchers and leading technology companies to drive innovation in computing - is collaborating with Microsoft Dream Space for a special live-streamed event for Science Week 2025.

Together, the Dream Space and CERN openlab teams will explore how scientists at CERN study the tiniest building blocks of the universe and how computing, and data, play a key role in making new discoveries possible.
The interactive session, aimed at upper primary and lower post-primary students, will also feature a hands-on coding activity using MakeCode for micro:bit, where participants will learn how data can be collected and analysed - just like scientists do at CERN when searching for new particles.
Learning Objectives for your classroom:
- Explore particle science at CERN by learning how scientists and engineers study the smallest building blocks of the universe and how STEM helps solve real world problems
- Understand data and patterns by seeing how computers and scientists find unusual results and how technology processes and analyses information
- Create and test a simple program by building a MakeCode for micro:bit project that shows how a computer can help us make decisions based on data
- Reflect on skills for discovery by considering how curiosity, creativity and teamwork support breakthroughs and how these skills can be used in everyday life
This collaboration between CERN openlab and Microsoft Dream Space highlights the power of partnerships in education and innovation. It also celebrates Ireland’s growing involvement in global science, inspiring young people to explore careers in STEM and to see how curiosity, creativity, and technology can help solve some of the world’s biggest challenges.
