Did you know Irish Sign Language (ISL) is the third official language of Ireland along with Irish and English? So, we decided it's time to learn our ABCs with help from Holy Family School for the Deaf Cabra.
Méabh O'Hanrahan from the RTÉ social team visited the Primary School, who had some very young teachers on hand to help. Massive thanks to everyone involved - especially the kids!

ISL the first and/ or preferred language of 5,000 Deaf people in Ireland. Approximately 40,000 people in general will communicate in ISL.
Also, can you mouth each letter as you sign them, without using your voice, give it a try and learn new language skills. You might notice that some of the letters are static and others are moving, letters such as J, X and Z.

On 14 December 2017, the Irish Sign Language (ISL) Act was passed by the Dáil. The ISL Act 2017, recognises Irish Sign Language is the third official language of Ireland and the first language of the ISL community.
From 22 to 28 September, we are marking ISL Awareness Week and International Week of Deaf People (IWDP).
